Makie was born and raised in Japan and lived in Hawaii before moving to Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems, and worked as a systems consultant before earning her Masters of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
She was previously involved in projects based internationally such as shopping malls in Japan but decided that she wanted to focus on residential work and switched to multi-family design. She has over 15 years of experience with multi-family architecture.
She volunteered at the big cat sanctuary in Boyd, Texas for several years, painting the steel enclosures that housed the big cats as well as designing the dorm facilities for their interns. This is something she wants to do again in the future.
